IDEXX R&D Murals

Research

The IDEXX R&D department is a collection of innovators that develop cutting edge technology in the animal health field. They needed environmental graphics for a new office that represented their department. The technology they build is complicated and interesting my first take was to develop murals based on the visually interesting hardware. However the hardware didn’t interest them and seeing it in there office wasn’t inspirational or interesting. Once I started to read and research about the products they create I developed a style and process to illustrate the important moment in each device.

Development/Iteration

By abstracting the core process of the device I was able to develop murals that were compositionally interesting that also speak to the goals of the division. Each mural was created first by meeting with a member of R&D and getting a brief breakdown of each device and its processes. After it would go through a sketching and development phase then presented to correct any inaccuracies in the depiction.

Final Implementation

In all 11 murals were created depicting different process within the devices this team was responsible for creating. The illustrations were to reproduced on frosted vinyl by a sign vendor which required multiple press proofs and tweaking to get to the result I had envisioned. By pushing the process of printing to its limits I was able to achieve the depth and detail that these murals called for. The final result is a space with pops of color and imagery that represents the past accomplishments while adding visual texture.
