Maine Wildlife Park Animal Icons

I was brought onto this project by the brand designer for the Maine Wildlife Park. While I had created illustrated icon sets for clients before, I had never taken on a collection of this scale: thirty different animals. Each illustration needed to be simple yet detailed enough to distinguish species at a glance, while also feeling cohesive as a unified set.

I began with broad sketches, reducing each animal to its most essential shapes and exploring stylistic directions. From there, I developed two refined styles and illustrated a beaver, moose, bobcat, and duck in both. After review, we moved forward with one selected style.

Next, we tested the system by illustrating some of the most visually distinct animals to ensure the approach held up across the full range of species. Every icon went through several rounds of refinement, some subtle and some more substantial, to arrive at a final set that felt both consistent and character-rich.

These icons will support wayfinding, merchandise, and broader brand storytelling, becoming a long-lasting asset for the park for years to come.
