York River Stewardship Committee
The York River Stewardship committee enlisted us to reinvent their visual identity and digital presence, seeking a brand refresh and website that would amplify their mission to preserve the river’s wild, scenic character. We began by joining the committee on a boat trip along the York River, experiencing its wildlife, natural textures, and storied landscapes firsthand. This immersive kickoff helped fuel every design decision, anchoring our work.
From the start, we worked closely with the board, scheduling frequent strategy sessions to align on vision and goals. Each milestone, from initial concepts to refinements to the final presentation, was reviewed together to ensure buy-in and shared ownership. When the logo concept was ready, we presented it to the full committee. This inclusive presentation sparked lively feedback, inspired group discussion, and led to collaboratively refined iterations. The final design was not just our work but theirs.
The logo mark emerged by layering organic shapes that evoke the river’s curves and textures. Typography inspired by historic nautical charts local to the region gave the design a sense of place and heritage. Brand colors and visual elements were chosen to mirror the river’s natural palette, while custom illustrated icons were developed to enhance usability and storytelling, especially on the homepage.
Once the branding was established, we integrated it into the website. Color palettes, signature motifs, and unique icons made their debut online, creating an engaging and authentic digital presence.
The result is a dynamic and collaborative brand identity and web platform that reflects the York River Stewardship Committee’s mission and roots. Stakeholders across the board and committee contributed meaningfully, resulting in a brand that flows as organically and proudly as the river itself.
